We don't get involved with costs here because there's way too many variables, but you're right that the charging system is the most likely suspect. You can do the preliminary test with an inexpensive digital voltmeter. You must find between 13.75 and 14.75 volts across the battery with the engine running. The second part of the test requires a professional load tester to test for maximum current output.
