My son has a 1998 ford ranger and it makes a noise that sounds like there is low fluid in the power steering pump. This niose is so annoying! I checked the fluid and it's fine and the fluid is clean. A mechanic said Ford has a problem with these and the only way to fix is with a new OE power steering pump from Ford. Is this true or will an after-market one work also, if this is even the problem? I just want to know before I spent the money on a repair.

Thanks,
Charlie

It's not a problem if it's workin ok I would say. Seems like a very common complaint on the net."Ford dealership told me that the pumps are just loud, nothing wrong with them, just noisy". People have replaced with after market and said that solved issue of noise. Others have had some success using 'lucas' additive for power steering.
