My car runs great, until it goes about 5 miles or the motor warms up, then it chokes out, then stops running; no mechanic can figure out the problem. Last time I drove it smoke poured out from under neath! The check engine light does not come on & it will start right back up, but am afraid to drive it. Been told the (new) catalytic converter may be burned out, it could be the fuel pump, or dirty fuel filter. But for 2 weeks it has been in the shop & the problem can not be found! HELP!

Check the fuel pressure first. As far as catalytic converter disconnect it and seeif it does the same if not it's something else.

Was the smoke white? Subarus have headgasket issues. Makes sense that once it warmed up, dumps coolant into combustion chamber, then bogs, and stalls. However a clogged cat can do the same thing, but usually wont make it 5 minutes. Usually around 15-20 seconds, then it has to much backpressure and stalls.
