Car wont start

My car wont start but it will turn over. When a rag soaked in gas was put up to the breather the car would start but only for a minute. The battery is also dead bc its been sitting for 3 yrs. What could be the problem? This is a 97 mustang 3.8

Do you hear the fuel pump come on for a few secs-if so check the fuel pressure if its within specs and also if the injectors are pulsing. If not check fuel pump fuse, fuel pump relay and inertia switch
