My car randomly seems to choke out and usually stalls especially during hard cornering when my petrol tank gets down below a quarter full but if I keep it topped up above this I have no problems. I was told it may have something to do with the fuel pump?

Not the fuel pump itself but could be due to the strainer attached to the fuel pump. It is leaking in between the fuel pump and the end of strainer. Lower fuel level could result in air being drawn instead of fuel when taking hard corners.
