The jeep would stall when pushing in the clutch sometimes, but running ok
So far I have changed, the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, new rebuilt carburetor.
It's running worse. Skipping badly, I have tripled checked the wires and firing order. Checked the timing. Put the old cap and rotor and wires back on. Ran the same, put all the new stuff back on. It started running so bad after a recent fill up. I put sea foam in the tank in case is hand some water build up.
Any ideas would be great! Could bad gas be the culprit? My next step was going to be draining the fuel tank.

It's has the 258 all original.
Do you
have the same problem?

FINALLY

A

CJ

WITH NORMAL, NON COMPUTERIZED CRAP

AND YOU BOUGHT A CARTER BBD (THE ONE WITHOUT THE STEPPER MOTOR STICKING OUT OF THE BACK?)

DO YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING

A REGULAR PLAIN JANE TIMING LIGHT?

A DWELL/ TACHOMETER (TACH) PORTABLE HANDHELD TYPE?

CAN YOU GIMME SOME MORE HISTORY LIKE HOW IT USED TO BE, ETC

WHEN YOU BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS ETC

I'M HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL, MANY OTHER CJ QUESTIONS I'VE ANSWERED HAVE GONE ANYWHERE FROM 1-OVER 100 BACK AND FORTH RESPONSES

I WILL BE PROVIDING PICS AND LINKING YOU TO SPECIFIC PORTIONS OF OTHER POSTS I'VE ANSWERED (THIS SAVES ME A BUNCH OF TIME OF HUNTING AND PECKING)

(I LOVE USING CAPS-JUST DEAL WITH IT! LOL!)

HOW OLD IS THE FUEL?

WE CAN BYPASS AROUND THE TANK IF NEED-BE

I CAN ALSO SHOW YOU HOW TO EZily DRAIN THE TANK PRETTY FAST, IF THE JEEP RUNS!

ANSWER MY QUESTIONS - BUY BORROW ITEMS NEEDED - PAWN SHOPS ARE A GOOD CHEAP SOURCE

ARE YOU MECHANICALLY ABLE, AND UNDERSTAND ENGINES/ ELECTRICAL STUFF

PLEASE, NO MORE JUMPING AHEAD DOING STUFF

WE NEED TO DO THIS METHODICALLY. SO GLAD IT IS RUNNING! SAVES MEGA TIME!

1ST JEEP QUESTION

ASIDE FROM "MY PRESSURE REGULATOR" AND "MY TEENY-TINY FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE" AND MY "RE-BENDING OF LINES" AND "MY 4BBL 390 CFM HOLLEY" ( I DO HAVE PICS WITH A BBD FOR LATER!)

ARE YOUR FUEL SYSTEM STILL HOOKED UP LIKE MINE IN THE PIC BELOW?
LAY YOUR HOOD ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME, REMOVE YOUR BREATHER, GIMME AN OVER-HEAD AND L AND R SHOTS OF YOUR ENGINE

I'LL THEN KNOW EXACTLY WHAT PULLED UP IN MY GARAGE!

HERE'S ANOTHER PIC

THIS IS "TEXTBOOK" (AS SEEN IN MANUALS)

THE ENGINE REALLY DOES NOT CARE WHERE #1 STARTS IN THE SEQUENCE

. AS LONG AS THE ROTOR BUTTON IS POINTING AT #1 WHEN THE ENGINE IS AT "PERFECT" TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC)

IN OTHER WORDS, IF THE ENGINE IS AT "TDC" (THERE IS A PROCEDURE TO GET IT THERE-AGAIN-IF NEED BE!) YOU CAN DROP THE DISTRIBUTOR IN AND THE ROTOR BUTTON POINTS ANYWHERE****AS LONG AS YOU MOVE THE #1 WIRE TO THAT SPOT AND RUN YOUR YOUR SEQUENCE CLOCKWISE FROM THERE, IT WILL RUN FINE

DROPPING IT IN "TEXTBOOK" LETS YOU SEE THE SAME THING IN A MANUAL***WHEN YOU DONE FORGOT WHAT I JUST TOLD YOU ABOUT!

AT THIS TIME

DO NOT MESS WITH THE DISTRIBUTOR RIGHT NOW- DO NOT UNBOLT IT AND PULL IT OUT!

I JUST WANTED TO SHOW YOU THE SEQUENCE

I AM MORE EXCITED THAN YOU ARE- CJs COME HERE FAR AND FEW BETWEEN!

Thank You for the very quick reply.

Yes the carburetor that I purchased is a direct rebuilt carter BBDwith out the electronic feedback, but does have the electronic choke.

I have a plain timing light but not a tachometer

I have owned the Jeep since 2000 and replaced all of the same components, back then, new carb, wires etc. I drove the jeep about 5,000 miles a year for the first 5 years, since then, I has been a garage queen on driven on a rare weekend. About 50 to 100 miles per year. I recently gave the Jeep to my daughter and she has taken it to college. So I have to drive a few hours on the weekend to work on it. She had been driving it everyday for about two weeks, and put about 200miles on it. Including my trip to give her the Jeep. It was running fine until she filled it up with gas. Since I have not put gas in the jeep in a long time. My guess is that filling it up may have stirred up the gunk in the bottom of the tank, I have never had it cleaned out. I will ask my daughter to take a picture of the top of the engine, rt and left sides, other wise I won't be able too until this Friday.

I am mechanically able, I guess that is why this is so frustrating,

I have the filter installed with the fuel lines, in the horizontal position. Not as you have them.

The firing order is installed as your picture shows, and wired to the engine using Cylinder 1 as the one in the front of the jeep near the fan.

Since I didn't turn the engine over. I simply removed the cap and rotor, and replaced them. I didn't align the the rotor button with one or TDC. I will check to see if the rotor is aligned with the scrib mark on the distributor.

SEE-UNS HOW MY (THEN) FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AIDED ME DURING TWO YEARS OF RESTORATION OF "WILLY", MY '46 WILLYS JEEP, WAS 100% PROFICIENT IN DRIVING HIM BY AGE TEN. IT'S IN THE WILL THAT SHE GET'S HIM! (SHE'S NOW 27, HER BIRTHDATE IS THE HOOD NUMBERS) I FEAR SHE'S GONNA KNOCK OFF DAD, SO SHE CAN TAKE HIM HOME SOONER. AS THE OTHER GRAND-MONSTERS LIKE RIDIN' IN 'IM TOO!

PICS WOULD BE GOOD, THE MORE THE MERRIER!

TWIST MR. FILTER AS SHOWN

PURCHASE 6? FEET OF 1/4 FUEL LINE

REMOVE "RETURN LINE" FROM FILTER (TOP/ ON THE LITTLE TI.T)

INSTALL YOUR 6 FEET OF NEW LINE ONTO THAT TI.T

THROW THE OTHER END INTO A FUEL CAN

STAY WITH IT! WATCH IT! DON'T WANT A BIG FUEL SPILL!

(REMEMBER, YOU HAVE AN OEM 15 GALLON TANK, HAVE MORE CANS READY!)

CRANK HIM UP AND KEEP HIM RUNNING

WITHIN 20 MINUTES OR SO, THE TANK MAY BE EMPTY

CAN YOU GET A DWELL/ TACH? PAWN SHOP/ AMAZON/ SEARS/ HARBOR FREIGHT

ARE YOU SMOG CHECKED WHERE YOU LIVE?

Love the Willeys,

I will get fuel line today, I have a bunch of fuel cans and can calculate the head pressure to match the fuel pump pressure. I think that's around 15psi.

I will also get a tach,

I included some pictures of the jeep the day I gave it to my Daughter.

I have not removed all of the smog stuff, but I did take the belt off the smog pump. Emissions are not required anymore because of the age.

I will reposition the fuel filter.

PICS MAY NEED TO BE RESIZED TO GET THEM ON HERE

YOUR FUEL PRESSURE WILL BE 4-5 PSI, BELIEVE IT OR NOT! I HOPE YOU AIN'T INSTALLED AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP- THEY ARE NOT WHAT MANY MAKE THEM OUT TO BE (THEY ARE MORE "NEEDY"), WHEN SOMEONE COMES TO ME WITH A FUEL PROBLEM AND THEY HAVE A 'LECTRIC ONE, WE USUALLY REVERT BACK TO THE OLE RELIABLE MECHANICAL ONE

DO YOU HAVE POWER BRAKES?

DO YOU LIVE IN A COLD REGION? KINDA WHERE?

ARE YOU USING THE ORIGINAL BREATHER AND ARE YOU STILL RELYING ON THE VACUUM OPERATED STUFF ON IT?

DOES YOUR CHOKE WORK CORRECTLY OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONVERT OVER TO A MANUAL CHOKE?

INSTALL AN AFTERMARKET BREATHER?

I'VE GOT SOME PICS OF THIS STUFF, I CAN RECOMMEND STUFF THAT I'VE ALREADY BEEN THRU "THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS" WITH

I'VE ONLY OWNED/ DRIVEN CJs, SINCE THE DAY THEY ALLOWED ME ONTO THE ASPHALT IN 1981

WE CAN GET RID OF A BUNCH OF YOUR UNNECESSARY VACUUM LINES !

THIS WILL MAKE THINGS EZier TO MAINTAIN, YOU WON'T HAVE 25 VACUUM LINES TO POSSIBLY LEAK

(I DON'T HAVE POWER BRAKES) RIGHT NOW I HAVE 2 "NECESSARY" VACUUM LINES AND 1 "UNNECESSARY" VACUUM LINE (IT RUNS TO MY VACUUM GAUGE ON MY DASH)

WHEN OUT JEEP SHOPPING, LOOK FOR VARIOUS SIZED VACUUM CAPS (3/8 AND SMALLER) THE NYLON/ PLASTIC "COLORED ONES" WILL LAST FOREVER, WHEREAS THE RUBBER ONES WILL SPLIT/ FALL APART AFTER TIME/ HEAT GETS TO 'EM

IN A PINCH, SHORT PIECES OF FUEL LINE WITH SMALL BOLTS/ SCREWS IN THE OTHER END WILL MAKE SUFFICIENT VACUUM CAPS

ONE PIC OF YOURS DID NOT MAKE IT/ I FLIPPED THE 1ST ONE, SHE LOOKS TO BE ASLEEP OR SUNNIN' UNDER YOUR TILT STEERING!

ARE WE COMMUNICATING WELL?

PIC IS MY 1ST ONE '77 CJ-5 W/ 304 TAKEN IN 1983-I SORTA MIMICKED THE PAINT JOB ON #6, MY PRESENT '77 CJ-5 W/258 ("MR. JEEP")

Thank you for you service, hope you had a great Veterians Day.

I love the old CJ, I had a CJ5 with the 304 in high school, back when you could get one for $500. Sold it for college money.

The Jeep was 100 percent original, even the shocks until, we beefed up the suspension to make it a little safer for my daughter to drive, by the way she is hugging it. She has love the Jeep since she was very young.
I saved all the old parts in case she get tired of it, I will gladly take it back and return it to the original jeep it was.

Under the hood all original,

Power breaks
Auto choke
Original breather
All the vacuum line replaced about 10 years ago, none are plugged or removed.

I think our communication is great except for my typos.

I am hoping to get you pictures via daughter later today, if not Friday.

Are these pics any better.

ANXIOUS FOR REALLY GOOD PICS OF THE WHOLE DEAL!

YOU CAN SEE A FEW PICS OF "WILLY" UNDERGOING 2 YEARS OF A MAKEOVER

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1970-jeep-cj5-bought-this-old-replaced-radiator-fuel-pump-battery-fan-one

BELOW ARE WILLY AND DAUGHTER IN '93 FINALLY STREET LEGAL

THE 3rd PIC WAS SHE AND WILLY IN 2007, WITH MY GRAND-MONSTER, WILLY GOT A 1943 GRILL IN THE LATE '90s, HE LOOKS MUCH BETTER WITH RECESSED HEADLIGHTS

LAST YEAR, I MODIFIED MY FUEL FILLER TO BE MUCH LIKE A WW II "MB", UNDER THE SEAT, USED A TOO FAR GONE MB FOR A GUIDE, DONE SOME BODY WORK AND WAH-LAH: SHOVEL AND AX!

I HAVE A FEW MORE COSMETICS TO GO, A NEW PAINT JOB, NEW "STENCIL TYPE" INSIGNIA (AS THE PLACE THAT DID THE VINYL LETTERING 1st TIME DID IT WRONG, GAVE ME A REAL DEAL TO KEEP IT)....THEN I WILL BE HAPPY!

The PCV valve is in the front of the valve cover but there is an open tube in the rear attached to the breather.

Live in Georgia, and would love to get all of the unnecessary vacuum lines.

My timing light is broken so going to stop and buy one.

I think the issue now is the choke turns on full when starting and take a long time for the choke to open up. Once this happens the jeep runs great.

Things I did this week end changed the oil, was two quarts over filled.
No one can figure how or when that happened.

New plugs, wires, cap and rotor, PCV valve replaced, old PVC hand two connections one to the smog cylinder and the other to the main line. The new one that I got only had the main line connection. My problem is no internet connection where the jeep is.

I MAY HAVE FOUND PART OF YOUR PROBLEM

PCV #2 ON THE REAR OF THE VALVE COVER

LINE SHOULD RUN TO THE BREATHER (CLEAN AIR COMING "IN"- AS PCV #1 SUCKS IT OUT)

PCV #2 SHOULD BE A "STRAIGHT THRU" FITTING (ELBOW, 45, ETC)

RIGHT NOW, IT'S A PCV VALVE (A CHECK VALVE)

THE VALVE COVER IS SUCKING (DUE TO #1 PCV VACUUM ACTION, "OUT" OF THE COVER), IT NEEDS AIR FROM THE BREATHER, #2 PCV IS "CHECKING" AIR CANNOT PASS THRU IT!

SIMPLE SOLUTION

REMOVE #2 PCV, TAKE HIM OVER TO THE GRINDER, INSTALL YOUR SAFETY GLASSES!

GRIND THE BOTTOM COMPLETELY OFF OF THE PCV, REMOVE ALL OF THE GOODIES INSIDE OF IT!

NOW IT IS AN ELBOW, NOT A CHECK VALVE, IT WILL FIT SNUGGLY INSIDE OF THE VALVE COVER GROMMET, AS BEFORE

COPYING AND PASTING THIS

FROM

ANOTHER QUESTION

SIMILAR TO YOURS

OH YEAH!

MORE ON THE PCV AND CARB

JUST THROWING STUPID NUMBERS/ AS I AM NO SCIENTIST/ BUT I DO KNOW THE "BIG PICTURE"

LET'S SAY THE CARB IN ALL PERFECTION IS WORKING 100% EFFICIENT AT IDLE

IT'S CRACKED OPEN AND CONSUMING 5 CFMs OF OUTSIDE AIR

IT'S ALSO CONSUMING 1 CFM OF AIR FROM THE PCV (RE-ROUTED, NOW "DIRTY AIR"), THE "PCV" IS MATCHED TO THIS CARB, AS
IT'S DESIGN ALLOWS THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF AIR THRU

THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PCVs OUT THERE-USE THE RIGHT ONE!

THE INTERNAL PASSAGES AND JETS OF THE CARB ARE "BUILT" FOR THIS "6" CFMs OF AIR

CHANGE THE VALUES AND IT WON'T ADJUST RIGHT, NOR BE AT 100%-LIKE RESTRICTING THE FLOW AS YOUR IMPOSTER PCV ELBOW IS DOING!

*****Scrambler2007***** DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE CALIBRATION/ RATIOS AIR/ FUEL THEORY I SORT DESCRIBED ABOVE?

EVEN HAVING THE WRONG PCV WILL AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF AIR THAT YOUR CARB IS DESIGNED TO USE AND OPERATE EFFICIENTLY (ESPECIALLY AT IDLE)

SEE THE PICS IN THIS ONE

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/2002-ford-windstar-high-idle-problem-had-scanned-friends-shop-iac-bad-needed

OK CRACKER BOY!

SEND ME A PIC WHERE THE BRAKE BOOSTER GETS IT'S VACUUM FROM (POINT WITH YOUR FINGER

I'LL START ON THE VACUUM LINE ELIMINATION PIC I WILL MAKE

LETS GET THE TIMING RIGHT

KEEP THE CORRECT IDLE SPEED AT TIMING AND WHEN TUNING THE CARB

AND AFTER YOU USE EITHER "MANIFOLD VACUUM" (LIKE MINE) OR "PORTED VACUUM" (AS FACTORY) I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH BOTH TO RUN THE VACUUM ADVANCE ON MY DISTRIBUTOR (FULL TIME MANIFOLD VAC IS THE TICKET FOR MINE

THIS REALLY RAISES MY IDLE SPEED WHEN CONNECTED, I MUST TAKE IT DOWN BACK TO 700 RPM WHEN IT IS USED.....JUST REMEMBER, ADJUST THE IDLE, TO CURB IDLE IN EVERY SITUATION, DURING AND AFTER TUNING

ANY QUESTIONS?

I WROTE THIS A GOOD WHILE BACK, SO IF SOMETHING DON'T MAKE SENSE, ASK ME!

THIS WAS BACK WHEN I TRIED TO USE LOWER CASE, MY USERNAME WAS "TURDDOG" (THEY MADE A SUGGESTION THAT I CHANGE IT) I CAN MAKE BETTER VACUUM PICS NOW! NO MORE MARKER AND CARDBOARD!

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/jeep-cj7-1985-jeep-cj7-stalls-when-hot

LEMME KNOW IF YOU CAN DO THIS

WHICH END OF THE PEACH STATE ARE YOU IN? I WAS STATIONED AT HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD (SAVANNAH) '82-'87, IT WAS NICE ONLY BEING 4 HOURS AWAY FROM HOME IN S.C.

At 1800 rpm timing is current at 18 degrees from 0 at 1800 rpm. Only issue now is carborator goes to full choke and stays there too long. I can mannyally pull it down and it runs fine. Once it is warm it runs like a dream
