We can start testing based on codes first. Are there any present. Cel does not have to be lit.

OR go by symptom.

Does this do this when hot, cold or both?

Any recent repairs (last few thousand miles._ regarding performance?

My explorer only does ths after it warms up, hasnt done it cold yet. The only repair that I have made, about three months ago, was to have the transmission rebuilt. The check engine light is not on either. Thanks

Thank you.

Codes can be set without the check engine light (CEL) on.
I would encourage you to have them checked. Sure they may not show anything, but when they do, it can be one more clue and direction to consider in the diagnosis.

I would suggest cleaning the mass air flow sensor. This is something that could be considered part of today's tune-up.http://www.2carpros.com/how_does_it_work/mass_air_flow_sensor.htm

Also clean the IAC:
