Thanks, I guess thats possible. I will have to pull it and see if it looks overheated again. If it over heated again what could cause that?

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system. Make sure it is bad before replacing it. Check to see if gets red hot when running the car.

Let me know what you find.

I have a 1997 f-150 128,000 miles on it. 4.2 v-6 engine manual 5 sp transmission.
I had a check engine light come on about 3 weeks ago. And took to auto zone. Code said bank one sensor one 02 sensor was bad and I replaced it.
Truck seemed to run ok if anything better

then I got check engine light again about two weeks later and have five codes repeated twice.P0135 bank 1 sensor 1 sensor heater circuit malfunction, p0141 bank1 sensor 2 heater circuit malfunction, p0153 o2 sensor CKT slow response, p0155 O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction bank2 sensor 1, p0161 O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction bank2 sensor 2, p1152 HO2S bank 2 s 1 insuff switching rich mean, then all these same codes are listed again in the same order.

If I have these codes cleared and drive the truck when the truck is warmed up(like home from having them checked). It does not set these codes. Until. The truck sits and cools off and I start it again.
Then all these same codes appear.

The truck seems to start and run fine. I do not notice any difference from the way it was running before the Check engine light started coming on. But like I said the light won't come on (after the codes are cleared) until the truck has cooled off.

I have had people suggest to just replace all the O2 sensors. Other people have said they all 4 would not go bad at once.
I have had people suggest the PCM is bad.(Where is the PCM and what does it cost?

I have had people suggest I have an intake manifold leak and it is burning antifreeze(intake manifold Is supposed to be a problem on older 4.2 v-6's). But I have not noticed any antifreeze consumptoin.
I have had people suggest the cat converter is plugged.

No to deep puddles lately,
no to washed the engine, at least not for 6 months or so.
No to run engine with air intake tube disconnected,

exhaust leaks no. I had some trouble with threads on o2 sensor I replaced. But I thought it went back in solidly.
The exhaust manifold is the original but is sound that I know of. May check it more tomorrow if that is a possiblilty.

Battery was replaced in May or June and is a good one.
Charging system no problems I am aware of.

Thanks again.

Can you help me determine the problem. How to diagnose it and how to fix it?

Thanks

The codes you are getting is becasue the sensor is detecting a lean engine or cylinder. This can be caused by an engine misfire or a MAF sensor that is starting to go bad. Here are three guides that will help you see what's going on.

A heated sensor needs nothing additional. I believe bank 2 is the driver's side. Check the injectors. The even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) are bank 2. (1, 3, 5, 7) are bank 1.

I recently scanned my truck with an actron pocket scanner and got code P0133. It said the malfunction is occurring in bank 1 sensor 1. Where would that be on my truck? And what model sensor do I use?

P0133 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Bank 1 is the driver's side, but no fault code ever says to replace a part or that one is bad. They only indicate the circuit that needs further diagnosis, or, as the case here, the unacceptable operating condition. While the sensor could be contaminated, it's more likely there's a problem on that side of the engine and the sensor is just reporting the condition. Changing the messenger won't change the message.

O2 sensor tests are hard to do and you ususally need special equipement, and the tests results are often inconclusive.

Hi blacktop, the code came in as p0175.
I understand this means a rich condition and it refers to bank 2. Can you tell me what side bank 2 is and if the sensor is before or after the cat.

Thanks for the help.

If its rich on bank 2 then it has to be sensor one which is before the catalytic convertor on the exhaust manifold, as the one after the convertor, sensor 2, is used for catalyst efficency.

Bank 2 is the side of the engine that doesnt include the #1 cylinder which on fords is the passanger side.

So your looking at the sensor on the DRIVERS side BEFORE the convertor.
