Trying to remove the yoke from the transmission but it's stuck. I know I can hammer it out but does the gear have to be in neutral so I can rotate it?

Hello, yes, the transmission must be in neutral to spin the yoke while installed.

If it's a 2WD automatic or standard the front yoke should slide on the shaft easily as that is how it operates with the suspension motion. If you need to hammer it at all you have a problem. The rear yoke on the differential however is held on with a large nut.
