Turn my vehicle on RPM's go up drop down and then it shuts off. Wont run in park or neutral, but put it in reverse or drive and it will stay idling.

Hi,

Is it drivable when in gear? Also, does the tach drop before the engine shuts off? Have you had the computer scanned to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes?

Here is a link that explains general causes. Take a look through it and see if anything helps. However, please let me know about the things I asked.

Take care,

Yes, the tachometer drops before it shuts off. Have had it scanned and only code is the nvld checked lines no problems. I can find have not tried driving it yet and I am changing the purge valve tomorrow.

If that is happening, it sounds like the crankshaft position sensor may be the issue. Before you simply replace it, I would recommend scanning the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a video showing how to scan the entire CAN bus system:

The sensor is located on the rear of the engine block (right side). See the attached pic. Confirm that it is tight and the wiring/connector to it are all in good condition.

Let me know.

The idea that the tachometer drops and then the engine follows sounds like you are losing signal from that sensor If that happens, you lose spark and a signal for the tachometer. The sensor may be good and there could be an issue with the tone wheel. I would remove the sensor and see if the tone wheel looks corroded. If it looks good, then we need to see if it is losing spark when it stalls.

See the attached pic.
