I know the battery is bad, measures 6v and with the battery load test it shows weak then with weak it shows bad, but even with a jumper box I just hear a click. But the thing is, when it tries to or when it clicks everything in dash goes blank as if there is no power or battery, even lights go off. I am going to put another battery tomorrow, but would a weak battery make it go blank when trying to start?

Hi,

If you still have the jumper connected, you should still have power. However, what you described sounds like a faulty connection.

Most commonly, a loose battery terminal will cause what you described. When you turn the key to run, it has power. However, when you turn the key to start, the heavy draw from the starter causes it to lose connection temporarily.

Take a look through this link and let me know your thoughts:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/everything-goes-dead-when-engine-is-cranked

Please note that in most cases the problem is with the battery terminals. However, it can be on the opposite ends of the battery cables where they attach.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Put a new battery, same thing won't start or turn over, but dash won't dim. It's like it's trying to turn it over.

Hi,

If the lights aren't dimming at all when you try to start it, it sounds like the starter simply isn't getting power. However, I need to confirm something. You indicate the lights don't dim but also mentioned it's like it is trying to turn over. Please explain. Do you hear a click or anything when turning the key to the start position?

Let me know. If you could record what is happening and upload it for me, it may be helpful.

Take care,

Joe

This is a push button, there is a click sound. I will see if I can record it, sounds like a weak starter that is trying but it isn't strong enough.

Does the click come from the starter motor? Do this. At the starter, there will be a heavy gauge red wire that should have 12v at all times. First, confirm that is the case.

If it does, have a helper try to start the vehicle. When the start button is pressed, you should then have 12v to the smaller gauge white wire.

If you have both, the starter is likely bad. Try this and let me know what you find.

I attached the starter schematic for your reference. Additionally, here is a link you may find helpful:

Let me know.

I removed the starter, and I can move the wheel out by hand, tested it on bench and it works.
I tested it on the car while it's out (not connected to the flywheel) and it spins, power on wire and solenoid. I tried to turn the flywheel, but I have very little space and I'm not sure if I have enough leverage, it is also in park, not sure if the flywheel can be moved while in park. You cannot put these cars in neutral unless they are running. So, not sure, I sent my son to test the starter, maybe it is weak and works on bench but under load it doesn't.

Sent my son to have tested at advance, they said it failed something about the rod. Is my test different than their test?

Just called them, they said it's supposed to push out and turn but it was only turning and not pushing out. Strange. If it wasn't then how come I didn't hear it spin while it was on the car and it only clicked.

Hi,

I didn't realize it was spinning. I thought there was no response when you tried starting it. As far as the flywheel, it will turn when it's in park.

If the starter is spinning and the drive gear doesn't kick out, the Bendix is bad and prevents it from engaging with the flywheel. However, you mentioned it only clicked, so that threw me.

Have you tried a new starter yet?

Let me know.

Were you able to check for power at the white wire on the starter to determine if it was getting what it needed to engage? I ask because if you had power, it should have at least spun.

Let me know.

Yes, the wire is getting power when it starts, otherwise the starter won't spin. I let the starter be connected to the wires but not installed in its place and it spun, but am not sure if this is the spun it should have had, advance said it didn't go out.

Yes, the drive gear should kick out, so it contacts the flywheel. If it doesn't, you are better off just replacing the starter. Years ago, we would rebuild them, but the cost of labor now would likely cause this to be a more expensive route.

Regardless, let me know if the new starter takes care of the issue.

Take care,

Joe

Put a new starter, and just like the original one it started to get hot only from two tries, it sounded better like it was trying to move the engine, but smoke came from it from heating especially the short wire between the starter and solenoid, extremely hot. I also had a jumper and it smoked from where I was attaching the ground cable, so I stopped.

Hi,

Are you sure the engine isn't locked? If you place a socket and a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt, are you able to turn the engine? If the starter can't turn the engine and it's smoking, that is what it sounds like.

Let me know.

It is extremely difficult to get to the bolt where it is, these cars will not go into neutral without the engine running.

Hi,

Something is preventing the starter from turning the engine. Are you able to get to anything that will turn the engine?

Also, if you go to the center bolt on the crankshaft pulley, you have to be careful not to loosen it. If it becomes loose, the timing will require adjustment.

Let me know.

I can't get to the bolt its tight and car is parked outside on a small incline and cannot be put in neutral to be moved. Why would loosening the bolt requires timing adjustments?

Hi,

When you loosen the center bolt, it changes the crankshaft position sensor angle. Take a look at the pic below.

As far as the shift lock is concerned, you can manually bypass it. The remaining pics below are the directions to release the shifter.

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,

Joe

I knew about this release mechanism, but this car does not have it. That was the first thing I checked. No tool, and these ashtrays are different, they don't come out. Tow truck also knew about it and couldn't find any other way to put it in neutral.
