I am trying to change the water pump on this truck. I am trying to remove the sand clutch. The tips that I have found say to add pressure to the belt which will hold the water pump pulley in place using the tool to remove the sand clutch. I tried that but the water pump pulley still slips through the belt and I'm unable to get the fan clutch loose. I tried a ratchet strap around the Water pump pulley and still was unable to hold it as I loosen the fan clutch. How do I keep the water pump fully from turning so I can remove the fan clutch. By the way the fan clutch is rusty, and I have used p b blaster on it.

Hi,

They can be a pain. For this vehicle (and many others), there are special tools designed to hold the water pump pulley in place while removing the fan. I attached a pic below showing what is indicated.

Oftentimes, a parts store will lend you a kit for replacing the fan clutch. Also, and don't laugh, what I do most of the time is place a wrench on the bolt holding the clutch to the pump. With the belt still installed, I take a heavy hammer and smack the wrench to shock and loosen the nut. It usually takes two or three hits, and it comes loose. Give it a try.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

joe
