Hi,
I have a 2001 VW Passat that won't start, very low miles in great shape otherwise.

What are the possible problems and fixes?

First thing I can ask you, does it crank? As in the starter engage and attempts to start or nothing happens when the key is turned?

If it doesnt crank then you should turn on the headlights and other accessories such as the fan and try to start it, if the headlights dim then the ignition switch is good, if not the ignition switch may be bad.

If it does crank and not start. I would check the fuel pressure, and compare it to specs, and I would check for spark, should be bright and blue.

i have a 01 vw passat that died while my wife was driving so I had it looked at and was told I didnt have compression and my timing belt was broke. Later I decided to look myself and found out the belt and the chain were fine. I dont have compression, could the belt jump a cog? I looked at the timing marks on the crank and cam, according to the marks its in time. I have spark and fuel. Are there timing marks on the cam shaft for the chain on the camshaft? Also I have a chilton repair manual and it says if you have a bad sensor the car wont start, if so which sensor is it thanx

You have a previous question about this same problem. Here is a link to it:

https://www.2carpros.com/forum/2001-volkswagen-passat-no-start-vt462810.html?highlight=

There are diagrams you can use to check to see if the timing chain has jumped.

A bad sensor would not cause a no compression situation.

Hello and thanks for donating

If the timing jumped it would still have compression, just low compression. Is the check engine light on? You may have a faulty crank or cam position sensor.

The engine light is not on, and I already replaced the camshaft sensor. Does it have a crankshaft sensor? Where is it located, thanks

If timing is good and sensor is good then only things left that will cause poor compression is internal mechanical issues such as worn piston rings, valve seals etc. Would have to tear down the motor and inspect all the components to find the issue.

Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Volkswagen Passat 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

i need help my car has been down for 2 years the engine turns over, it has no compression. Here is what I checked out;it has fuel, it has hot enough spark, the timing belt is fine and in time, I replaced the camshaft sensor I took the spark plugs out and saw the pistons move up and down. My wife was driving it when it died, there was no noise or anything, it was just all of a sudden. Would really like some help, thanks, Chris

Check the fuel pressure if its within specs and also if the injectors are pulsing.

Equally scored cylinder walls? Bad rings? High mileage motor? Dual blown head gaskets? Maybe the valves are not properly seating? Did the motor get over-revved and the valves are ever so slightly bent? Many things mechanically can do it and most likely if one is bad all are bad (piston rings, valves, etc.)

It has no compression. I've overlooked this one-Very low engine compression the engine will not start

the fuel system is fine same results: I take this that the fuel pump is producing the correct fuel pressure as mentioned earlier but is the injectors pulsing

Even if the pistons are up and down- could have jumped timing but being park for 2yrs the engine just don't lose compression and jump time.

Give me more info am lil confused here-this engine should fire up if this 3 ingredients compression/fuel and spark are up to par. Something is not right

The car died while driving two years ago. Right after it died I tried starting it did the same thing its doing now. What about the head gasket, if that is bad wouldnt there be oil leaking where its bad?

The experts need a bit more info before they can help.

Did you check:
- for ignition spark?
- injector pulse?
- fuel pressure?
- crank sensor?
- stored ECM codes?

When was the last time it ran? Any symptoms that lead up to the no start? Hesitation? Long crank time the day before? Cutting out / stalling?

Thomas
