1998 Vauxhall Corsa overheating?

I havent been driving long. Ive had the car 5 months or so, today I noticed the gauge on the bottom left hand of the dashboard which shows a temperture, im guessing engine temp? It was raising to 100 degrees c and raising when engine running. This is worrying. What is the problem and what do I need to do?

First check the coolant level .. if this is ok .. have a repair centre inspect the coolant system with a pressure test and a cylnder compression test
