I believe I tripped the immobilizer when I was repositioning the ignition lock cylinder in order to secure it in the proper position (troubleshooting a no-start issue and this seems likely to be the culprit, which is the reason I was in the steering wheel area to begin with)

initially when cranking to start the car would make a sound next like when does that is already started and

the initial problem I was having was that when cranking to attempt to start the car, it makes a noise much like that of a car that is getting cranked when the engine is already running. My ignition lock cylinder is loose and the slides around quite a bit in the ignition, so I figured that since it had been this way for quite some time it probably just got to the point of being bad enough to cause a no start. I figured the cylinder has slipped into a position that was causing the computer to believe the engine was already running when I was trying to start it with my key. So I figured I would try to straighten out the lock cylinder/tighten the loose bolts securing it and get everything lined up properly and then try to start my car again.
in doing so I discovered as I suspected yes everything was loose and slightly off-kilter so I fixed that and then I discovered a purple wire coming from the ignition switch that had been crushed and compromised, appearing to be almost completely broken. So I repair this wire and then put everything back in place and try to start my car and got a different response then the initial issue I was having. Now I'm getting the no crank no start- electrical is all working but the vehicle engine will not do anything. In the past it has been my experience that this is what it does when one of the Anti-Theft systems has been set off. I had also had the battery disconnected prior to this because I was replacing it with a new one.I put in the exact same type of battery and as far as I'm able to tell there is no battery reset procedure or IBS in my year/model.
the battery was connected while I was making the repairs to the ignition and ignition switch wire.

I've not tried letting the car go to sleep with the trunk open and then disconnecting the battery yet. That is my first go to idea until I discovered this handy feature on your site to :-) any ideas 2 disarm immobilizer/anti-theft and get my car started again?

Thanks!

I have not done it on a BMW but this works on most vehicles which is to turn the key to the on position for 30 minutes and just let it sit. This will basically time out the immobilizer and unlock the system. If you have an ignition issue then this may not work.

Here is also a guide that will have some ideas as well:

Worse case scenario is we need to scan for codes and go from there. Clearly if the theft light does not turn off then we have an active system and we should have some codes to tell us what is happening.
