Truck listed above 1500 46re transmission shot. I have a Durango 44re that I want to replace it with. Both are on 5.2L V8'S. Both are 4 speed automatics. And both are 4x4's. Why will this work or not work. Sounds like it should be a swap, plug in and go scenario.

I suspect you are correct because the case for both units is the same. However, what I am not sure about is the tail-shaft between the different vehicles which means the driveshaft lengths are different. You may have to swap the tail shaft as well.

However, I should mention that the 44 can not tow as much as this basically just went in the Dakota and Durango. So I would be mindful of that as 1st gear is the major difference. Other then that, I believe all else is the same even connectors.

Long story short, I would not be worried about making the swap as any issues should be able to be overcome. Just pull them both out and compare them sitting next to each other just to make sure. Thanks

Thanks for the info. You sound a little uncertain with your answer? I'm looking for a more definitive answer before I rip out the other transmission. But thanks.

The only way you are going to get that definitive answer is to pull the units out and set them side by side. I know that the units are the same case and the components inside are slightly different. However, I have never put one in the other vehicle so I can't say it is going to be a "plug in and go scenario" like you are looking for me to tell you. Any time you are changing things there are going to be things you have to work through but if it were me, I would not be afraid of making the swap.

Hopefully you can understand my position as if I tell you it is fine and just do it and then your expectations were different then mine and now you are upset at this site for telling you it was a plug and play when it wasn't. Just trying to give you the facts so you can make your decision.

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'm a little leary because I'm paying for the 44re transmission. It was the cheapest I could find and transmission's with a warranty are crazy priced! I also had a mechanic friend say about the tail shaft swap. Maybe I will pay him to pull it and go from there. Thanks again!

I get it. Unfortunately these things are never just a plug and play deal but this is something that I would attempt because I am sure any of the issues that do come up can be solved.

The only thing that gives me pause is how much price difference there was between the new units and this one, because those work around solutions to make these work can add up. However, if you got a good deal on this one, I am sure you will be fine even if you are having someone else do the work.

Thanks for using 2CarPros. Let us know what you decide and if it was difficult to make the swap. That will be good definitive info for anyone else who is looking at this. Thanks

Dropped the pan on the 46re transmission and did a filter/fluid change. The scag off the band adjustment screw was laying in the pan. 3 hours later I was back in business with bands adjusted. Seems okay except first gear is slow going and chatters a little as it starts to go. Any ideas? Loose band? Bands to tight? Fluid level is okay.

That is progress and progress is good.

Most likely that is the friction material starting to fail and it grabs causing the chatter. You can try a trick that works about 1 in 4 tries by adding friction modifier to the unit.

This is actually for rear ends but it basically softens the clutch material so it stops chattering. I included a picture of what it looks like. You just add this to the fluid and then drive the vehicle about 100 miles to work it in. It may not clear it up 100% but it will most likely improve it.

If the band was too tight then it would jerk or not shift properly. Chatter is most likely a clutch that is not slipping properly.

I know if sounds odd but I have Chrysler dealers add this to transmissions all the time and it doesn't harm anything except on the newer transmissions. However, on RFE units it is just fine. Don't add more then one 4 oz bottle or it could dilute the fluid.

Couldn't find additive at any local parts store. But got similar product and symptoms seemed to go away. Now i'm having trouble with neutral and reverse. Truck goes forward in neutral and I have no reverse at all. Also in park it wont rev up. Feels like it's still in gear. Any ideas?

Most likely your shifter is out of adjustment. However, we are going to need to get a new post started because at this point people wont find the solution to these issues under this post so we need to start one with this issue and we can get you the info on how to adjust the shifter.
