Good day. My last transmission gave up so I bought a used one to replace it. It is a 4afe transmission. The car is not changing out of first gear. I found all types of tests online to check the solenoids. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am very good at troubleshooting so I am ready to do what it takes to get my car working properly.

It looks like you are getting closer. Can I ask if the engine gets up to operation temperature? Do you have a thermostat? If not the computer never goes into closed loop which can effect the transmission shifting. I also think the transmission is a three speed, but here is a guide and the transmission wiring diagrams to help you run some test to double check the wiring:

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

Thank you Ken. This information is very helpful. I will update the progress. My second mission will be getting my speedometer and tachometer working. I am also going to double check the transmission lines for leaks. When I experienced the change of gear it felt like the car red lined then changed. This car is a used car I bought seven years ago and I believe the electrician just connected the wires he was familiar with so I am tracing back all of them to bring things running the way it was intended to be.

Wiring changes can make things get interesting. Do not trust the wire colors if things have been changed. Some companies are good about using the same colors for the same functions over the years, others will change them and suddenly the blue wire they used for ten years to power a circuit is now an orange wire and the blue wire is a signal feed.
As for the speedometer issue. That signal is also used to control shift points, with it missing it can cause multiple issues with the transmission controls. It looks like that signal is on the violet/white stripe wire from the speed sensor.

Hi guys, thanks for all the assistance. I finally got "Betsy" my car running almost to its best. There were several issues and and every bit of information I got from you all lead me in the right direction. I had issues with my IAC sensor and the tachometer as the main contributor to the gears not changing. I got a tachometer from a scrap yard, plugged it in an the gears started changing fine. The diagram I got from Ken helped me find all the wires that were left out. I prefer my original tachometer so hopefully I can get it repaired. I saw videos of the issue being a capacitor. A lot of mechanics in my area told me the transmission cannot work and it felt good driving pass their shop with a smile on my face. 2CarPros. Com. Thanks guys for the swift responses as always.
Will keep the updates coming in as I progress.
