When the engine gets warm the transmission goes into a false neutral. Was running and shifting fine. Replaced the water pump then this started happening. Where is this sensor at and where can I buy one to replace it? Transmission speed sensor.

The speed sensor is inside the instrument cluster. Is your speedometer working correctly? If it is not working, it could be due to a broken speedometer cable. How did you come to the conclusion that the VSS is bad?

The speedometer does not work. I saw online that the false neutral could be caused by sensor. Am I correct about this? It is a sensor connected (I think) directly to the transmission. I can easily find this part for a Toyota Camry or Corolla. When I search for the Tercel it looks totally different than others. I am not sure what exactly I am looking for.

Check the speedometer cable, it is attached to the transmission and goes into cabin to be joined to the speedometer. If it is broken, the speed sensor would malfunction. Without speed sensing capability, the transmission shifting or performance can be erratic.
