Car would not accelerate from stop sign, engine just revved

Car drove fine. Got to a stoplight. Went to accelerate and the engine revs only. Pulled over and put in park. Restarted the car, fired right up but when put in drive or reverse the car acts as if it is in neutral and rolls backward and only revs the rpm when pushing the gas? Could be solenoids? Could need transmission fluid? Trying to pinpoint without having to replace the entire transmission or rebuild.

Good morning,

The first thing to do is check the fluid and see if you have a leak. If that is okay, then I would have the pan dropped and see if the filter is clogged with debris. That will prevent the transmission form engaging into gear.

Is the check engine light on? If it is a solenoid it would set a code in the system. Engaging into gear is mechanical not electronic.
