1984 Toyota tercel 4cyl, 200,000 miles. The car ran fine until I ran out of gas. I refilled the tank and tried to start the car, it would start then fail seconds later. The car will run if I pat the gas but will not run on its own. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Same result, the car will start. Its getting gas, but it will not continuously run. Also the engine when it is running does not sound the same, it sounds rougher. Any help appreciated.

I have a little list of possible causes.

1. Loose or faulty electrical connections at distributor, coil, or alternator.

2. Insufficient fuel reaching the carburetor or fuel injectors.

3. Vacuum leak at the gasket between the intake manifold, plenum, and throttle body or carburetor.

4. Idle speed incorrect.
