Car working fine but went on holiday for two weeks when returned found engine tickover speed high and when engine idling revs going up and down

Clean the Idle Air control valve, and the base it fits into.

If you are saying you have an engine tick, then I would change the oil and filter.

Gasoline will deteriorate, usually within a month and begin to break down and cause a varnish build up.

I use a fuel stabilizer in my tank, it will keep gas fresh for 12 months or more.
