Recently purchased a 1995 Toyota Camry that was not running for $650. The girl we bought it from, said she doesn't know what is wrong with it. Her description of when the problem started was. She was returning to Tucson from Phx and did smell something different, wasn't sure if it was a burnt smell or not. But when she went to pull into her apartment complex, the car would not go into gear. And she had to coast into the parking lot and the car has been parked since then. When I looked at it, I can start the car but I can move the shifter into any gear without the clutch being in or even if I push the clutch in. Any ideas what it might be? Have you heard this issue before? Have had a few people say check the clutch, other say maybe trani linkage.

Really? So I You suspect the clutch and pressure plate. Would that be the reason why it feels like it's in neutral and I would I be able to shift the gears with the shifter while its running?

Well just tried that but can't give a definitve answer, as the car is on a slight up up angle. Seemed like we could get it to move a maybe a foot.
So if it rolls or not, what is that indicative of?
