Have someone starting the engine and someone else spraying starting fluid in the intake tube in short repetitive bursts in attempt to keep engine running. Don't press the accelerator during this test. If it runs then the issue is fuel related. If it doesn't then is something else.
Check for good consistent spark from the spark wire. Put a long screw driver in the spark plug wire boot (be gentle) and lay the screw driver really close metal on the engine. Take care as you can get shocked when doing this so don't touch anything on the car with any part of your body on the vehicle. Wearing gloves will help.

1990 Toyota Camry 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1990 Toyota Camry V6. The car dies when I acclerate from a stop light and sometimes when I'm still driving. I am scared to take the car out because someone might hit me from behind when the car dies. I don't know what's wrong with the car. We recently replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, distributer cap, and did an oil change. Sometimes when we start the car up it dies right away. If you step on the gas for a while, the car will idle and it will run. However if you don't then the engine will just run and die right away. Any suggestions on what it might be that's causing this problem?

It sounds like your idle air control valve is not working. This valve opens and allows air into intake to maintain idle. When its cold it opens more because the car needs more gas and air to run. When the car is warm and you are at idle the valve is closed.(That is your base idle). When driving and letting off gas the idle air control valve partially opens to compensate for the various driving conditions. By stepping on gas pedal at idle you are eliminating the valve.

Engine Performance problem
1990 Toyota Camry Automatic

why does my engine die some time after I start using the car. This usually happens after not using the car for more than 8 hours. I can start the car just fine but when I begin driving, the problem starts. Usually, this happens when I step on the gas after the light turns green (mostly in an intersection) or every time when I come to a stop sign.

Sometimes, the engine will not really die but will be like it's gasping for gas. What I do is I pump the accelerator or step on it really hard. After 15 - 20 mins. Or so of driving, the car runs fine. I know that the is some leak in the engine as I can see it on the pavement where I parked my car.

The car was just given to me by my uncle and I have no idea about the history of the car. All I know is that he bought this brand new then.

Purchase a vacuum guage and connect it to manifold vacuum. Run the engine at idle and note the guages operation. Step the speed up to 2500 RPM and note the opeartion again. Please relay back, in detail, all information.
