So I bought a 1998 Toyota 4Runner yestereday. The guy I bought it from said the timing belt has never been changed and that he didn't think it needed to be (he had done some auto mechanic stuff in the past.) We took the car to my auto mechanic and at first he said it definitely needed to be changed but then looked through the owner's manual and through his computer system and couldn't find anything about the reccomended mileage that it be changed at. Do I need to change this? Thanks!

Hi wgsharpe,

The maintenance schedule for 90 k miles (144 k km ) recomends changing the timing belt if used under severe conditions.

For normal driving conditions the mileage for replacement should be another 50 % therefore now should be the time to replace it. If you wish to hold on, it is best to have a visual inspection of the belts to confrim it is still in good condition.
