My wife was sitting with the car idleling and it stutter and then died, she turn the ignition off and then immediately turn the car on and it started right up and sounded fine. This is the second time this has happened to her, does anyone know what this might be? How do I fix this swithout taking it in?

Check the fuel pressure to rule out a failing fuel pump-If okay might want to start checking the cam and crank sensors and airflow meter-

I had a similar problem w/my 98 4runner this summer. We were driving along and it started to feel like we had a flat tire. We pulled off and no flat. Lifted the hood to listen to the engine. Nothing sounded wrong. Revved the engine and could feel and hear the engine studder. We drove 40 miles home barely making it, anytime the engine was put under load it would shake and studder. Long story shortened. Ended up being a bad fuel injector which also burned out a spark plug wire. In this case the check engine light did occasionally come on for a few seconds each time. Good Luck
