1994 Toyota 4Runner loss of power

The problem I'm having is while driving my RPM's go up and down and then I have no power truck back fires and drives fine. I have had a new engine installed in this truck. Could this be a bad airflow sensor. Also then engine light has not come on.

Could be losing fuel pressure -check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge designed for your fuel system with and w/o the pressure regulator and comeback with the readings
