Timing, can I turn the camshafts with the chains off to align without harming anything?

5.4 3v Replacing timing chain, phasers. Also removed the cams to replace the followers and 'lifters', can't think of the name. Crankshaft alignment is good. This is my dilemma. Not knowing, replaced the cams probably in the wrong position. I know about the chain marks. My question is, can I turn the camshafts with the chains off to align without harming anything, or do I have to loosen the cam caps to reposition them. Hope you know what I mean.

Turn them gently. If you feel binding rotate the crankshaft just enough to clear and get the cam into position, then put the crank back. Get it all lined up and install the chains and tensioners. Don't release the tensioners until you are sure things are lined up. Check the crank wheel over for any problems before you install it.

I'm recovering from Cancer and doing a little bit every week. I'm not sure what to do, when I put the chain on the left, lined up with all the marks, but it was loose on the bottom. The right side is off about two to three links. Should I remove the cam and put it in the right position, Thank you for all your help. David

Cancer stinks. That said, you set up the left side first then the right side. Start with the keyway at 12 o'clock. Then put on the guides. Then the left chain gets put on and lined up. Then the tensioner guide and the chain tensioner. Pull the pin on the tensioner. Then you start on the right chain. Set it in place then install the tensioner and pull that pin.
