2000 Subaru Outback clutch squeaks when engaging

The car will make a squeaky noise when engaging the clutch. It is loudest when going from stop to first or stop to reverse, but also makes it when downshifting. Local mechanic suggested possibly needing new clutch or transmission, but looking for a second opinion. Thank you!

To me it sounds like the pressure plate may be getting weak and causing the noise when you release the clutch. There needs to be a lot of pressure on the disc, and if there isn't enough, this could happen.

I doubt it's the trans.
