1985 Other Subaru Models Blown Head Gasket?

I am contemplating buying an '85 Subaru GL Wagon that the owners say ran fine until the other day when it blew a head gasket. What would be the cost of this repair? Also, would it be a fairly easy in-home garage repair and that cost?
And if it were a cracked block?
This car would be a first for my 17 yo son and they are asking $500. Car appears to be in great shape otherwise and I'm just wondering if it is worth going out on a limb for.

Hi there,

This is not really a job for a novice home mechanic, Subaru use a steel head gasket and the mating surfaces must be near to a polished finish to ensure a perfect seal, Setting valve timing can also be tricky and you will need to know what you are doing to get it correct. As for a cracked block, very unlikely indeed. For the price you are getting the car, I would be getting a qualified mechanic to do the work, as he will be able to inspect timing belt bearings, water pump and cam seals as well.
