Electrical problem
1992 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Got home from work the other night and thought I could hear a whirling or small whining noise, like a loose belt or something, without thinking I turn the car off. I immediately tried to turn it back did not get any power, no dome light or dash lights, no clicking noises. I double checked to make sure it was fully in P and found out I could not move the shifter to any other gear. No bad smells. It was too dark to look under the hood. The only odd thing on the way home from work was on the freeway I had the manual light on about a third of the way before I noticed it, I hit the button to turn it off.

The next day I attempt to start it with the same results, no power and unable to shift (not sure, but I think I could shift before out of P when no power). I tried to jump start it with my battery pack I keep in the car for bad days and did not get even a flicker of power. I check the pack to make sure it was fully charged and it is. I do not think it is the tranny as I should get power I would think. The battery was replaced a few months ago, and I have an oil and radiator flush a month ago. They did not detect any but a small oil leak. I plan on testing the battery over the weekend just to make sure that it is still good.

I figured out the problem. As for the gear shift, sometimes the 'safety' button clicks in and I need to press it, it was a long week and I had other things on my mind. As for the power issue it was the positive battery cable become corroded enough that it snap, did not notice it at first until I went to remove that battery for testing. Replace the wire and I am good to go.

Case solved.
