Since the truck runs, it is communicating. If it was not, the pump would not work at all and the engine would not run at all.

In order to test the ECM, you would need an advanced scan tool from the OBD1 days to monitor the commands. You would have to remove the ECM and send it out to have this tested.

I've been wanting to buy an OBD1. A former mechanic in town may still have his. If not would I send it to a Dodge dealership or? Where is the ECM located?

Just tried to find an OBD1 code reader on line but no luck for Dodge. I have an OBD2 and did see an adapter cable for adapting OBD2 to obd1 do you think that will work? I tried the key on and off 2 or 3 times but no flashing digits. Saw one site said on-off 5 times. Another said hold down trip reset and turn key on for flash codes, I'll try those suggestions. I'll try calling Summit Racing Monday see if they have an OBD1. Do you know anywhere selling one? Thanks, Al

Snap On makes there scanners compatible with both OBD1 and OBD2.

I doubt a dealer would test it as it is too old for them.

I posted the location and procedure for you for the ECM.

Roy

REMOVAL

The engine controller is located in the engine compartment behind the battery and under the left front fender.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at battery.

2. Disconnect the positive battery cable at battery.

3. Remove battery holddown clamps and remove battery.

4. Remove 60-way electrical connector from the engine controller.

5. Remove the three engine controller-to-mounting bracket bolts. Do not remove the engine controller mounting bracket from the fender.

6. Remove controller from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

1. Check pins in 60-way controller connector for damage. Repair as necessary.

2. Position engine controller and install mounting bolts.

Tighten bolts to 4 Nm (35 in. Lbs.) Torque.

3. Connect 60-way electrical connector to the engine controller.

4. Install battery.

5. Connect battery cables to battery (positive cable first).

Okay, I'll check out your new response. Managed to get an Auotxray scanner to use from a former local mechanic. It has a cable that should fit and appears to handle both 1 and 2. Just reading up on it. I take it from your comment of "dealership not testing" that I should be looking for a new ECM if the scanner shows that is the problem. I assume the Diagnostic connector in the diagram is the point to plug in the scanner? Yes, the truck is old but still 48 years younger than me. I'm concerned it may be harder to get parts. Don't want to have to buy a new truck. Thanks, Al.

I attached the ECM for you from Rock Auto. They have them in stock and they are plug and play with no programming needed.

Thanks. Yes, I check them out. Nice day here should be able to test with scanner today. Is the plug to connect the scanner the diagnostic connection in the drawing from a previous message?

Well sir, good weather but no go. First there is no box/ECM on the inside of the driver side fender. There is a black box with a lid on it and a large bundle of wires going into it. I took the lid off and there are 4 or 5 small clear plastic topped square look like plug in fuses or switches? Electrical anyway. The plug for the scanner is on the passenger side fire wall. I plugged the scanner in and tried a scan and it kept saying vehicle not responding. Turned key on, same thing. After key was on awhile I heard the pump working away. Tried to start to see if that would change the read out, but start. The picture of the ECM at rock auto is not visible anywhere under my hood. There is a box on passenger side fender but bigger and looks nothing like the picture. Wife's away today on med visit, will send a photo Thursday when see gets back with the cell phone. Thanks again. Al.

Yes, I will on Thursday. Wife has cell/camera in Kamloops on Hospital appt. She will get home tonight about 8pm west coast time. Was Dodge building trucks in Canada? Maybe it's Canadian and diff from U.S, built? Know my 2003 Lancer Evolution was built in Japan and parts are different from U.S. Built Lancer.

Fancy meeting you here. I was on my wife's cell checking out the location of the ECM and saw a 3 year old YouTube video of installing an ECM in a 1992 Dodge Dakota and it is on the passenger side fender. I recognized the box from my truck. It appears to be bigger than the Rock Auto pic. But ordered one from Rock Auto and see if it matches. Figure I've gotten a couple hundred thousand more Km than they were intended to last and the fact the scanner couldn't get a response from the truck. I'll send pics when I get up. Just as I was turning off the cell phone in order to send this, I saw you had sent your last message above. Thanks, Al.
