Two days ago my car quit running when I got to a red light and was idling. Today it won't start unless I apply gas and its rough engine shakes and struggles. The second I let off the gas it dies. The tachometer also bounces when at idle or low speeds. I think because of the age of the engine the idle might need to be increased but have no idea how or where it is on the idle control. My knowledge of cars is basic inanimate breaks, oil changes fluid checks. Everything that I know seems to be fine. And this issue came on all a sudden and I have no idea where to start

I have checked online and it seems there is dozens of possible issue from the idle to fuel pump filter to transmission fuses vacuum sensors. The list just goes on and on and is different from each source.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

The idle speed on this vehicle is controlled by what is called an idle air control valve (IAC). The IAC is responsible for maintaining the idle speed and isn't adjustable.

I have a few questions. First, is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running? If it is, you need to have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it for free or lend / rent you a scanner. Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

Next, when starting you indicated you have to press the throttle pedal. Do you have to press it to the floor? If so, that causes the engine's computer to either shut down the fuel injectors or minimize the amount of fuel injected into the engine. If that is the case, it could be a faulty fuel pressure regulator allowing too much pressure to the fuel system and flooding the engine, or it could be related to an engine coolant temp sensor (ECT).

If you just have to touch the throttle lightly, then I suspect something is simply preventing air from getting to the engine. Check to make sure the Air Filter is good and not plugged and that nothing is blocking the air intake tube between the air box and throttle body. At the same time, check to make sure you don't see any disconnected vacuum hoses or electrical connectors.

Please let me know exactly what is happening when starting. If possible make a video of the car starting so I can hear what is happening. Also, let me know if the check engine light is staying on as well as if the throttle needs pushed to the floor for it to start.

Take care,
Joe
