The car will restart multiple times, but each time it restarts, it quits within 2-3 seconds.

Hi Errington,

Is the idleing speed aprocimately 700 rpm when it is running well?

Does pressing the accelerator cable helps?

I still suggest checking the main relay.

1990 Honda Accord
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1990 Honda Accord 4dr and the problem is that sometimes i can't start the engine. It's like it'll not start and then we leave it for a few hours and restart it again then bam it works again perfectly fine. I don't know what to do. I've wasted alot of money fixing this and it seems like the problem is still there and nothing has changed. If you can, can you please help me, because i'm tired of getting stuck at work or school like this. I think that maybe its due to the heat. But I want to know what the problem is with the car so i can fix it? Why does my car keep doing this?

check basics, fuel , and spark(ignition), and also check the mass airflow sensor along with the airfilter and breather, if the breather is saturated, replace it with a new one, change air filter and change pcv valve.

Hi francisco84, Symptoms are consistnt with an intermittently failing PGM-FI main relay. When it fails, the fuel pump would not work.

i just bought an accord, it runs great but only starts when it wants to, i believe it to be a electrical problem because ive been over the car, everything works on the car. I have spark, the timing is right on, the engine turns over everytime i try to crank it but it only starts 3 out of the 5 times i try to start it, when i let it sit for awhile it starts but it seems as if the fuel pump isnt kicking on all the time when i turn the key on. is there a way to Bypass the original wiring for the fuel pump to something like a relay and a toggle switch. i found a connector has a wire pulled out of it inside the fuse box under the hood, but it is not labeled, could this also be the problem

I had the same issue it turned out to be the ignition coil...
You can also check the amount of pressure the fuel pump is putting out.
If you haven’t yet its probably easier to change the fuel filter.
if there is a power problem to the pump it is usually a fuse or a relay.
If a fuse or a relay is out than it will not start at all.

Hope that helps a bit…

Hi sbrownson,

Most probably the head gasket is blown. Get a pressure test done to confirm.

Before replacement of the radiator, the head gasket most probably was damaged and the problem is surfacing now.

Hi needydecatur2, When sparks are available, the next thing you should check is the fuel. When ignition switch is turned on, listen for operations from the fuel pump. If none, you should check the PGM-FI main relay which is known to fail intermittently. Resolder the circuit board if you fins any cold solders.

Hi jbzshot,

Check for sparks at plug wire end. Pull one out and attach a spark plug. Ground to engine and look for sparks while cranking.

Check the area that you did the screws. Check for blown fuses.

Hello !!

Check fuel pressure and see if the spark plugs get spark when cranking the engine and comeback with the results.

good Luck!

I have a 1990 Accord that has approximately 222,000 miles on it. The vehicle will start fine in the mornings or on cold days however now that it is warm to hot the vehicle will not start when it has been setting in the heat. My wife can start the car in the morning go to work and then in the afternoon after sitting in the parking lot and the sun the car will not start. We then can go back after the sun has gone down and the car will start. Have you heard anything like this?

99.99% sure your pgm-fi is the problem. i've lost count on how many these i've changed. the symptom that gives it away is it won't start after sitting in the sun. the relay is located under the driver's side near the steering column. its "fun" to change. make sure to get it from honda. it's a big relay with two plugs going into it.
