The engine starts and idles great. I can rev the heck out of it and it sounds great. But whenever I put it under load it spits and sputters. I have changed many parts, but same results.

Looked it over not sure what part pertains to mine. Let me start from where the problem started. Ran it probably forty to fifty miles ran great. Ran it another day twenty miles the starter spitting and sputtering after taking off from stop sign. Got it home on trailer, changed fuel pump no good, did a carburetor rebuild before all this started, put old coil back on no good, change ignition module no good, change pick up coil in distributor no good, messed will the timing some no luck. I am out of ideas and very frustrated any help would be appreciated.

If you are still sorta OEM

You have a "Prestolite" distributor and ignition system.

(not ruling out other stuff)

That is, the distributor has a white plastic front with two cylinder looking things, one of which has a vacuum port for the vacuum advance.

Just from experience, Prestolite is not great, I upgraded my 1977 to Motorcraft, found in the 1979's

Lets do a little test!

Hook up the timing light

Plug the vacuum advance hose that feeds the distributor.

Fire it up

See the harmonic balancer mark-steady on the timing numbers (as in the link I gave you)

Now

Increase the engine speed

Is the mark moving (advancing) or not?

Return with results!
