I have a 77 jeep cj5 it sat for 20 years with out running I fixed it up and now it will start but it will stall out after about 2 min and if it does stay running it will start to sputter at about 30 mph in 2nd gear then stall out and not want to say running I can figure it out its got a new gas tank, sending unit, fuel pump, and filter I've cleaned the carb and no luck I have seen that the the choke sticks open a little but I'm just lost on it
Do you
have the same problem?

This cold very well be in need of a carb overhaul especially for sitting so long then adding todays fuel in it. It may have worn out the accelerator pump and power valve as well as who knows what in carb or if it ate the float out in the center which happens quite often with plastic floats.

LET'S TRY THIS

IT AIN'T GONNA HURT NUTHIN'

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/jeep-wrangler-1988-jeep-wrangler-engine-issues-when-braking

IF YOU DISCONNECT THE FUEL LINE NEAR THE CARB---STICK IT IN A JAR---CRANK THE ENGINE OVER----IS THE FUEL COMING OUT STRONG AND IN SPURTS?.......IF IT'LL IDLE FOR 30 SECONDS, YOU SHOULD GET ABOUT A PINT OF FUEL IN THE JAR

THIS MAY RULE OUT EVERYTHING BACK TO THE TANK...LEAVING THE CARB

I TOO HAVE A '77 I HAVE MADE MANY USER FRIENDLY MODIFICATIONS TO IT

RETURN WITH A GRIN.....I'LL HANG WITH YOU AS LONG AS YOU KEEP RESPONDING

And Friday I will be getting the coil and a distributer cap just in case and so I can trust it more. I don't know if I mentioned that when it stalls at idle its like it was shut off and it will fire back up right a way but when I try to drive I don't want to fire back up and I have to pump the gas a bit. Sorry if I am just giving you info in peaces but I want you to have good details

If you can put your hand over the carb and it idles better that means you are cutting air to carb and it will idle better because it has an internal vacuum leak. Either rebuild the carb or get another one.

IT'S SOUNDING LIKE YOU ARE GETTING TOO MUCH AIR----MIS-ROUTED LINES. VACUUM LEAK. OR TOO MUCH GAS. OR CARB/ DISTRIBUTOR ISSUES

DO THIS WELL AWAY FROM STUFF YOU LOVE--WITH A SOPPING WET TOWEL (1ST LINE OF DEFENSE) AND A FIRE EXTINGUISHER (IF NEED-BE!)

GET HIM RUNNING---THEN SPRAY CARB CLEANER AROUND THE BASE OF THE CARB---THEN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD (TOP AND BOTTOM)
THEN ANY WHERE ELSE THERE IS VACUUM LINES OR VACUUM APPLIANCES.I CANNOT TELL IF YOU HAVE A BRAKE BOOSTER IN THE PICS

WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE ENGINE TO DIE OR GO INTO CARDIAC ARREST WHEN THE CARB CLEANER HITS THE VACUUM LEAK AND SUCKS IT IN. WAH-LAH! YOU MAY HAVE FOUND IT!

SEND ME THE PICS. POSES I REQUESTED BEFORE (GOOD LIGHT).I MIGHT CATCH A GLITCH IN HOW THINGS ARE CONNECTED

IT ALSO COULD BE THE CARB. ADJUSTMENTS. OR SOMETHING INTERNAL. LIKE THE FLOATS ARE TOO HIGH (BBD FLOATS ARE BRASS). OR THEY HAVE A HOLE IN 'EM AND ARE SINKING. MR. CARB IS COMPLICATED, SO IF YOU ARE UNSURE, DON'T TAKE HIM APART!

BEFORE YOU BUY BIG STUFF, CONSULT W/ ME!

I MADE YOU A DIAGRAM ABOUT THE EGR

KEEP US POSTED

WELL THE "RAG THING" SHOULDA CHOKED YOU OUT. IT JUST GOT FLOODED!

HOLDING THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, AND CRANKING WILL QUICKLY CLEAR OUT THE EXCESS FUEL AND IT'LL FIRE BACK UP

REPEAT THE PROCESS 2-5 TIMES

THIS MAY NOT FIX YOU. BUT IT WON'T HURT NUTHIN'

THE WHOLE IDEA IS, THE CARB IS SUCKING VACUUM/ AIR INTO THE THROAT. WHEN YOU BLOCKED OFF THE SOURCE, IT WAS STILL DRAWING A VACUUM INSIDE. AS IT "SEARCHED" FOR AIR, THE ONLY PLACE IT COULD GET IT WAS TO SUCK THE FUEL THRU THE INTERNAL PASSAGES IN THE CARB. THIS SOMETIMES WILL CLEAN OUT ANY CRAP THAT IS IN THOSE PASSAGES

. AND YOU HAVE "TIMED IT" AND MADE "CARB ADJUSTMENTS" AS PER THE LINKS I SENT ON THE 1ST PAGE THAT PERTAIN TO TUNING?

WHEN YOUR JEEP IS AT OPERATING TEMP, AND YOU ACTUATE THE THROTTLE A TIME OR TWO, YOUR CHOKE BUTTERFLY IS ALL THE WAY OPEN AND IS STANDING VERTICAL?

GET ME THEM PICS. REMOVE THE BREATHER.L AND R AND TOP OF THE ENGINEWITH THE ENGINE TAKING UP MOST OF THE PICTURE FRAME. THE MORE THE MERRIER. CLOSER IN SHOTS OF THE CARB, ALL SIDES.I JUST WANNA SEE HOW THINGS ARE ROUTED. MAYBE I'LL FIND A GLITCH

WE'LL GET IT ALL FIGGERED OUT!

I AIN'T FORGOT ABOUT YOU!

ARE YOUR EMISSIONS TESTED IN YOUR REGION. WHAT DO THEY CHECK ON THIS JEEP). IS YOURS EXEMPT BECAUSE OF AGE?

WE REALLY NEED A PLAIN JANE TIMING LIGHT AND A DWELL/ TACH METER TO TUNE THIS PUPPY AND ALSO TO TEST THE DISTRIBUTOR'S OPERATION

PAWN SHOPS ARE A GOOD INEXPENSIVE SOURCE FOR THESE "DINOSAURS"

HAVE YOU CHANGED THE COIL OR THE IGNITION MODULE (TELL ME---DON'T DO IT YET). GIMME THE COIL'S PART NUMBER, AND WHERE IT CAME FROM
