Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

If the speedometer stopped working, chances are there is an issue with the output speed sensor. I have attached a picture of it for you to see. It is located on the right side of the engine next to the transmission dip stick tube.

First, unplug it and make sure there is no corrosion or rust in the plug and the wiring is in good condition.

If all looks good, I need you to conduct the following test.

With the key off, unplug the two prong plug. See the attached picture 2. Number 1 on the plug is ground (green wire). Confirm the system's grounds by checking for continuity between the wiring and the vehicle ground. If there is no continuity, you will need to find a break or damage done to the wiring.

If you find a good ground, then you need to check the sensor's ground for an open circuit (no ground) or a short in the sensor wiring. Simply place one multi meter lead to one of the sensor pins and the other to a known ground on the vehicle. If you find an issue with sensor ground, replace the sensor.

Last, if there is no problem with the grounds, using a multi meter, check resistance in the switch itself. Simply place the two multi meter probes on the sensor, one to each terminal. Resistance should be between 400 and 600 ohms. If it is not within these specifications, replace the switch.

I noted that you said you have knowledge with working on vehicles. Just in case, here are two links that describe how to use a multi meter and how to check wiring:

Remember, the key is in the off position for testing. Let me know if you have questions or need additional information. Also, let me know what you find.

Take care, and I hope this helps.

Joe
