1997 Saturn SL2 Smoke under steering wheel

While driving the car yesterday, felt warm air from under steering wheel-stopped to get gas, when I turned ignition off, white smoke came out from under steering wheel-can't describe smell, electrical maybe? What would cause this?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch u will have to remove ur steering column covers and look at the black wire going to ur ignition switch and see if the wire is melted.U will need a 5.5mm nut driver to take the covers off do u have one?
