94 Saturn SL

I'm having the same trouble as an earlier visitor where the gears are difficult to change when I depress the clutch. The must car be off in order for me to shift into reverse or first gear and then it moves slowly once I start the engine, inching along as if the clutch is semi-released. However, the problem diminishes considerably once I've driven the car for a half an hour or so. I've been using the RPM and tach to gauge shifts and starting from a dead stop in second. Any ideas what might be happening here? I haven't tried any repairs or taken it in for a diagnostic yet.
