Can anyone tell me what this sound could be? Only happening when braking and just faintly there when it’s parked and on.

Hi,

Wow, that is loud. You indicate it is worse when the brakes are applied. Is that correct? Is there any point on the vehicle where it sounds louder? Have you been able to find anything loose?

I can't be 100% sure, but it sounds like it's internal in the engine. However, that wouldn't increase with the brakes.

Do me a favor. With the hood open, see if it is louder. Also, check to make sure the serpentine belt isn't spreading and slapping different areas causing that noise.

Hearing it while parked leads me to think it's not related to the brakes, so bear with me.

Take a look through this link as well. It describes different engine sounds.

Let me know. Also, let me know how the sound changes with the brakes applied and moving.

Take care,

Joe

This is when the brakes are being applied, not in park! It seems to be louder towards the front of the car. I will open the hood today and see what’s up and get back to you.

That does not sound like a brake sound. Most auto stores have what appears like a stethoscope that doctors use, but the end is a rod and when you touch a different area it will pick up most sounds. Do not put the end on moving parts of the engine. That way you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
