Just recently we have a rattling noise when the car is driving between 5 and 40mph. No sound when stopped at red light or in park or neutral. Rattling seems to be coming from right under the middle of the car. Someone said it might be the drive shaft but they weren't sure. Noise seems to go away when you are going 50 or more but maybe road noise at that speed muffles the noise. My question is what do you think it might be and how serious. Should I get it fixed right away and how much do you estimate the cost to be?

Thank you very much for your response.

It sounds more like you have a loose heat shield on a catalytic converter or muffler. You will need to raise the car up safely to check it out.

Also check the engine mounts becasue they will allow the engine to move around when the engine is under load which can contact a frame member

Here is a general guide on car rattles:

Please let us know what you find.

I checked out the muffler shield and catalytic converter shield and they seemed tight. But I did notice that the driveshaft U joint was completely rusted out so I had it replaced and the noise is gone! Thanks for your help I will tell a friend. :)
