A few months ago my ignition started acting odd. When I'd attempt to shut the engine off, it wouldn't release the key. Sometimes all I had to do was wait a moment or two and that would solve the problem, key would release. Lately it doesn't want to release the key at all, no matter how many times I try. And although I can shut the engine off, it doesn't stop drawing off the battery. So if the car is parked for more than 12 hours, the car won't start.

Yet sometimes it releases the key as if there's not a problem at all. So, what exactly is the problem and what is it going to cost to fix it?

Have you tried using a new / spare key in the ignition? Also lubricate the ignition cylinder with some WD 40. If neither of these help then the lock cylinder will most likely need replaced.
