1988 Pontiac Grand Am engine shutting off

My grand am is starting hard. It acts like it is not getting fuel. It will start after a minute and run fine. When I go down the road and push down the throttle petal so the transmissions kicks down the engine shuts off. It will start right back up and runs fine. I have checked all the fluids and they are fine except that the car has used about a quart of antifreeze over a course off several months.
