My starter cranks excessively when starting. I can crank for 5 seconds, stop, turn the ignition off and on again, then try again. It will then start right away. The "Check Engine" light is on constantly, so I know some part is not working properly. Which part is it?

My 96 did the same thing for over a year, a mechanic told me the fuel pump was getting tired. When you cycle the key on and off the pump runs and it starts. He was right as a few weeks later it died and it was the fuel pump. Located in the tank and its pricey! Fuel pump was $371 and 4 hours of labor. Hve the fuel pressure tested by a professional.
