My truck was running good just had the check engine light on and oil pressure gauge bouncing. AutoZone suggested changing the fuel filter and oil sending unit, but before I got it done while driving it and it just shut off. Now when I try to start it, it doesn't do anything except for the dash lights come on. I took a wire and went to the starter straight to the battery with the key on and the engine turned over. What should I try next?

Hi,

Does anything happen when you turn the key to the start position? For example, do you hear the starter click or the relay engage?

As far as the original problems, what codes did AutoZone provide you with that led to replacing the fuel filter and oil-sending unit?

When the engine was running and the oil gauge was jumping, did you ever notice any ticking or knocking from the engine?

Let me know. If I am understanding correctly, the starter is no longer engaging to start the engine. Just for curiosity, check to see if it will start if you put it in neutral. Also, take a look at this link, you may find it helpful:

Also, let me know if this is the 3.0L or 4.0L V6. If it is a 3.0L, let me know what the 8th digit of the VIN is. It should be either a V or a U.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

The vehicle identification number is 1ftyr10u42pa496b. Before it quit running when I turned the key on, I could hear the fuel pump running but now nothing, just my dash lights come on. I don't remember the code that AutoZone gave me.

Hi,

Does the starter engage? If not, I need you to first check the fuses and the relay shown in the wiring schematic below. In addition to checking fuses, make sure there is power to and from them.

Here is a link you may find helpful:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

If the fuses are good, move to the starter relay. Remove it and switch it with a different one in the relay box having the same part number.

Here is a link that explains how to test the relay and its circuit:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

If that tests good, at the starter motor there will be a yellow wire with a blue tracer. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check if there is power to that wire.

If the starter is functional and the fuel pump is non-functional, locate the inertia switch on the passenger side kick panel and press the reset button to see if then you hear the pump prime. The last pic below shows the location.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi,

I'm very sorry to hear that. I hope everything is okay.

There is absolutely no rush. Whenever you get to it is fine.

Take care of yourself.
