The battery and brake light dash lights come on and the temperature gauge shoots up to hot after the car is driven for a few minutes. There are codes p0401 and p0403.
The water in the radiator is moving when the engine is running, and the electric fans are turning on. There is no water leaks that I can see.

These codes are for a problem with the EGR valve. Make sure that any vacuum hoses are connected and that the EGR are working. Has the drive belt come off? With the battery light being on the alternator is not working and a broken belt will cause this check this first. If okay, do a head check, most work shops can do this quickly. It is a chemical check for combustion gasses in the cooling system. If positive you will have a head problem.

I checked the fan belt it is tight. When the water temperature suddenly shoots up the dash lights blinks sometimes or stays on steady until the water temperature drops to the middle of the gauge.

Change the thermostat as it may be sticking closed and requires a fair heat soak to get it working.
