Severely overheating

It is overheating so bad that I can feel it in the gas pedal. It is real real sluggish it is like it doesn't want to go. I just replaced the water pump, but I did not replace the thermostat. Could that have something to do with it or could it be the catalytic converter or something completely different? I am a single female that knows nothing about vehicles. Can you please try to point me in the right direction.

Yes, it could be the thermostat. That is a common reason for overheating.

My concern is from the overheating, you may have damaged the head gaskets. That would require major engine work to repair.
