Overheating

Driving this morning on the interstate car was overheating and then cut off on me.

It may have cut off because of the overheat, check coolant level then have it pressure checked for internal leaks like a head gasket. then check fuel pressure as well as low fuel pressure will cause the cutting off . auto parts has a pressure checker and fuel gauge see link for fuel pump.

It has been cooling off now for about two hours would it be okay to try to start it up and see if it is making any noises or if I can add coolant myself.

Feel the top of radiator with hand if you can two hours should be sufficient but add coolant prior to starting if it will. If it still feels hot to touch then wait a bit before opening radiator cap.
