I really dont know if this is it but it might be the PCM or ECM, whatever you want to call it, my cierra did almost the same thing only every time I hit a bump or stopped to suddenly it would die. So you might look at that, tell me if im right, please.

Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Oldsmobile Ciera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 108.00 miles

Hi all
I have a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with a 2.8 motor. When I start it up it runs for about 10 or so min. And then stalls out After it stalls out it does not have any spark at all to any of the spark plugs. I put in a new Ignition coil control Module but did not change the coils. In this ols it has the three coils. Dose anyone ever had this probem and repaired it. Hope to hear from anyone on this soon. Thank you.
Larry

I'd check B+ and ground at the ignition module, first. Pink wire with black tracer is voltage, goes hot when you turn on the key. Black wire with white tracer is ground. It won't start without rpm signal, that signal comes from the crank sensor.

the engine cuts out when I let off the gas. What could this be? Is the fuel pump not working? How can I check it?

If the fuel pump was bad, chances are it would die when you press the gas. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Does the car start right back up? Has the check engine light come on?

I changed my spark plugs and it ran good for a while. Then it started running bad again. But when I do the spark plugs again it will run good again. For a little while atleast. What could this be. Could it be the coil packs? Or the coils computer

If the light is on, have the computer scanned for codes. Most parts stores will do it for free. As far as the plugs, when you remove them, are they black?

Could be problem with ignition module. The igniton module has to send rpm signal to computer, without that signal, n o injector pulse. National brand autostores can test ignition module for some vehicles. Call them, see if they can test.

The purple wire with white tracer carries rpm signal from ignition module to computer. If you have a meter of some kind that will react to a dc pulse, you can check that wire, engine cranking. If no signal, suspect ignition module.

When you place it in reverse, does it lurch like you are letting the clutch out on a standard transmission?

2.8L mfi, present dtc codes 15, 24, 42. The car overheated and quit running, I have repaired coolant leaks, replaced thermostat, replaced coolant temp sensor and cooling fan switch. I start the engine but when it reaches operating temp it stumbles and quits running.

Check yoru fuel pressure first it should be 41-47 psi. Then check the tps for low voltage and seeif your cold start injector is ok. That is the one on passenger side by itself, it may not be giving fuel

Check resistance in crank and cam sensors, they may be high and the heat is effecting them. Unfortunatley we have on info on what it should be so check againsta new one at auto parts store
