The overdrive light flashes from time to time on vehicle. When it is flashing the transmission down shifts hard and up shifts same. There are times you feel a jerk or bump much like a stall torque. Fluids have been changed and was told a transmission module. Help.

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4. I was doing some trail riding today didn't give me any problems but then I get back on the highway and I started to notice it wouldn't shift until 3,000 rpm's, then it stopped shifting at all. Drove it home in 2nd gear and the overdrive light started flashing has 2000 xxx miles on it I'm not sure what to do; solenoid change or just replace the transmission? Not sure what to do. Never gave me any problem at all still pulls strong in 1st and second. I don't want to waist the money on solenoids if it wont fix it. They are like $60.00 a piece for those. Any help would be cool. Thanks

Good afternoon,

This issue is caused mostly by the torque converter. It may either be stuck in lock up or will not lock up. When that happens, the light will flash and disable converter commands.

Are there any codes set in the system?

The first thing I would do is change the fluid and filter. Check the magnet in the pan for any metal or debris.

Since the check engine light came on, the vechicle's computer has set a code or several codes. Are you able to scan the computer for codes.

Took explorer to aamco for free computer scan. They said input and output sensors on transmission weren't even and they also received signal from transmisson selinoid. They want to take it out and take it apart and check it out. Don't have the money for that. Any ideas?

You mentioned that the trannsmission was shifting fine before. Did anything unusual happen while driving that would indicate a problem just before the check engine light came on and the overdrive light started flashing. Strange noises? Tranny overheating? Towing a large load? Trouble going into 4x4? It seems unlikely that a vehicle with barely 70,000 miles would blow a tranny.

You may have a bad shifting solenoid.

I've had the explorer since may 2006. I've never towed anything or driven it in 4x4. Nothing seemed any different no noises nothing. I drive it mostly to work and when I can I visit my family who lives two hours away. I basically drive it like a car.

Chances are that the transmission was slipping and the computer put it in safe mode, it will probably need to come out to be fixed.I recommend an actual transmission repair shop look at it

Does anyone know if you can change the shifting selinoid without removing the transmisson? Not sure where the selinoid is. Thanks
