Car will not start with key. Mechanic checked starter and battery and all fine. Set up lead from starter to positive terminal on battery and connecting lead with key turned to on will start the car.

Mechanic thinks it might be an electrical problem which he does not fix.

Looking for any other suggestions before I take it to a dealer and spend stupid money hoping they can figure it out.

The most common cause of a no-crank condition is the neutral safety switch/transmission range sensor. The best approach is to find any other shop that has a scanner to view live data and see what the computers are seeing. I have never run into an independent shop that did not have the ability to do this type of work. The scanner will also display diagnostic fault codes in the numerous computers. Without knowing those codes, you could waste weeks trying to figure out which circuit to begin looking in.
